Sensorial Object

Weaving, needle felting. Cotton, wool. 18 in x 18in. 2016.

This woven tapestry challenges the dominance of sight by inviting alternative forms of sensory engagement. Made from white cotton with inset handmade Grade 1 Braille in felted wool, the all-white surface resists immediate visual comprehension, requiring viewers to approach closely and engage through touch to perceive its text and form. The work reflects on both the viewer’s and the maker’s reliance on sight, revealing the tensions embedded in visually driven modes of knowing. Drawing from poetry by Nayyirah Waheed, the piece considers intimacy, return, and connection as embodied, sensory experiences rather than purely visual ones.
